First Period Experience

Where were you when your first period started? How old were you? Did you talk to your mom, friends? What was your initial reaction? Retrospectively, could it have been different or more positive experience, and, if so, how?

OMG I'M DYING! :p

I was 13. I had a summer babysitting job. Two of the most terrible little boys on this earth! I have back issues due to an accident when I was really young so at first I mistook the cramps for back pain. The boys had built a fort out of couch cushions and when I climbed in they jumped on the fort and it all came down on me!! after I finally recovered I went to use the restroom and there it was! I knew I was due to start soon since most of the women in my family started around 13 but I freaked out and thought I was bleeding internally!! I called my mom at work and she rushed to check on me only to discover I had started my period.. She then proceeded to tell EVERYONE about it. It took me a few years to live down my over reaction.

Mono, oh no!

I was 12 when I first got my period. Oh, how exciting, right? Just like a million other girls. But there is quite the catch...I got my first period when I was sick...no, not just a mere cold, cough...not even the flu, but mono. The worst sickness possible to the human kind that does not (always) require hospital time. It's like the flu x strep throat. At first though, I had no idea. My parents had been gone on a business trip in West Virginia, while I was stuck at home with my grandparents and younger brother...see why I thank God I didn't start until after my parents got home? My cousin spent the night that Monday, and the next day (since it was right after easter) we had some easter eggs still in the fridge. Well, my cousin, being her obnoxious self, dared me to take on of the eggs and swallow the yolk whole, no chewing allowed. Me, being my stupid 12 year old self, agreed. The only reason I mention it is because now we joke about how me swallowing that egg got my "eggs" moving since I got my period that week! my parents got home Saturday night and I told my mom i was sick. That night, I went to the bathroom around 4 AM after hardly sleeping at all with the awful fever I had...and discovered the "menstrual" truth. I knew what was going on, but was peeved about it. Yeah yeah, I know some girls get all happy about "becoming a woman," but I hated the inconvienience of bleeding. Luckily, I didn't get cramps until I was around 14, and still experience them now...but not that I'm happy about them lol! So of course, I walked down to my parents room and thankfully was able to only wake up my mom. She got really happy after I said "I think I got my period," in a half asleep voice. But, even being in my sleep-induced state, I told her one thing: "Mom, you better not tell anyone. Not your friends, no one in the family, nothing." To this day, I don't know if she did or not.

What do you mean my period? What's a period?

I was only 9! My mom & I had def not had "the talk" yet and to top it off, she was out of town celebrating my aunt's birthday the weekend it came. I didn't want to talk to my dad for obvious reasons so I called my sister who lived hundreds of miles away at that time and she calmed me down. We tracked my mom down and she returned home right away. In the mean time, I changed my underwear just about every hour and threw the soiled ones in the garbage when my dad wasn't looking lol. Starting early was common in my family, but not THAT early. It was a traumatizing experience, but I survived!

its a dog eat dog world out there:o)

I had just turned 12 and had a few friends who had already gotten their periods so my mom had previously seen used pads in my garbaage and asked but it was always no, until it was yes. i felt so terrible and had the worst cramps and backaches and thought i was sick. i took a nap on the couch to try to feel better and when i woke up saw it and wasn't quite sure so i told my mom and she took me shopping and explained everything to me. two days later i was at my friends house and i put my used pad in her garbage and her dog ended up taking it out and chewing it up in the dining room!!! then her mom came home and saw it and asked my friend if it was hers (she hadnt had her first one yet) and asked another adult woman in the house and no one else had theirs. my cheeks were so red and then her mom talked to me about it too. she was very understanding though and told me it happened to her and she has to push them to the bottom so i felt better but still!!!

The beginning

I was 16 and in my family that is REALLY LATE both of my younger sisters started before me. My mother was very worried. I was on spring break from high school (Thank GOD!!!) and my dad was cooking eggs. I was in my room and i felt like i wanted to puke the smell of cooking food was making me sick. a few hours later i went to the bathroom and saw the blood. I went and told my mom who was very releived.(she had taken me to see a specialist because she was worried something was wrong) tho i only got it once a year for the next 2 yrs......( this also started my issues with fertility)
