First Period Experience

Where were you when your first period started? How old were you? Did you talk to your mom, friends? What was your initial reaction? Retrospectively, could it have been different or more positive experience, and, if so, how?

no screaming, no tears

I think I was about 11 or 12 when it arrived, I remember it was either a friday or saturday. I had pantyliners in my underwear draw and a few assorted pads that were freebees, I changed and told mum, who was really happy. She had just told me about a girl in america who had a party for her first time, she asked me if I wanted one. I remember saying No, the embarrasment of other peple knowing was really bad at the time. Mum told my dad and he came in and gave me a hug.

What an offer!

I was 12 when I got my first period. I was at school at the end of the day when I noticed a bit of heavy colored discharge, but I didn't really think anything of it because I'd been getting that for the last month or so. Then, when I got home, I was changing my clothes and when I went to change my underwear they had pink in them. I freaked out and yelled for my mom as loud as I could. Practically screaming bloody murder (no pun intended).

Well, my mom, my sister, and my mom's boyfriend at the time came running down the hall so I said, "No, JUST mom!". She came in, I showed her what happened, and she told me it was ok and told me how excited she was for me. We didn't have anything in the house so her, my sister and her boyfriend went to the store. Then, it didn't occur to me, but now I know it was probably to warn them of the impending doom of having another menstruating woman in the house!

Anyway, when they got back, she told me how to use the pads and that was about it. Although there was one other VERY memorable moment about it... when my mom's boyfriend came up to me and said, "I just wnat you to know that if you ever need me to buy you pads or plugs I will do it for you, you just have to ask." Wonderful, huh?

Horrible beginning.

I was 12, in the seventh grade...I started one afternoon with brownish spotting and was in complete denial of what it actually was. I refused to believe it was my time. I hid my period from my mother, and everybody else, for the first few cycles. I doubled up my panties, wedged toilet paper, did anything to absorb without actually using a maxi pad. My mother found out what I'd been "concealing" when she removed my laundry from the washing machine one afternoon. I was embarrased but relieved that she'd found out.

I was 12 and at school

I was at school when i started my period the first time. I didnt know what it was, and i was freaked out by it. My mom and I hadnt ever talked about it, so i was clueless as to what was goin on with my body. I remember that i used a wad of toilet paper to keep from staining my clothes. When i got home, i was going to tell my mom, but that day she had company so i couldnt tell her. It was a few days later when she was doing laundry that she asked me if i had started my period. I remember telling her that i guess i had, cause i didnt know what it was. We didnt do anything to celebrate and we didnt talk about it. Fortunatly, i had friends at school and the guidance councelor to talk to about it and what to do. My best friend showed me how to use pads and later she explained to me how to use tampons. Thank god for best friends!

The first time i got my period i was 14, my mum was a late starter also and she didn't start her periods until she was 18!!! The day i started i was so shocked as i assumed i would be like my mum. So then it finally hit me that i was no longer a child, i was a young woman!

ahaha...timing is everything

i was 14 when i first got my piriod. i was not really worried, but it was annoying cause i had to listen to all my friends complain, and i couldn't relate. one of them got hers when she was 9 (but it went away for a year) and most of them got it in the last 2 years. the upside of having friend that all had it was they were really helpful when i got mine, in the middle of the school day.
