First Period Experience

Where were you when your first period started? How old were you? Did you talk to your mom, friends? What was your initial reaction? Retrospectively, could it have been different or more positive experience, and, if so, how?

My First Period Experience

When my first period started it was a sizzling July and I was 11. I had read about this event that was destined to take place yet, I did not completely understand all of the details. How was I going to know that there wasn't something wrong with me instead? I panicked. I let it go for about two days before I came to my mom with my under wear stained and tears coming down my face. I had no idea that my mom would bounce up out of her chair & tell me to get dressed so we could go to the store. For what? I thought. Then, before I knew it I was in the feminine protection aile watching my mom thumb through brands. We went home. She stuck me in the bathroom with a box of tampons and shut the door. I yelled "Where does it go? How do I put it on? Is everyone going to see that I'm wearing it?" My mom yelled back "You'll figure it out. These things come with instructions." Needless to say, she was right. Later that evening she had left and come back with an ice cream cake that read "Happy Menstruation." I was embarassed until I grew up and realized that this was a small celebration of my woman-hood. My mom stood over the cake with a knife and said "It's filled with chocolate and it's going to make you feel better." She was right about that too. That chocolate was so much more delicious than it had ever been. In retrospect, I learned that women definitely love chocolate for a reason. In addition, I learned that women hold so much strength, thier design is so special, and although we go through more pain than a man could ever know, we are rewarded handsomely.

Scared to tell

It started on a Wednesday, but I didn't tell my mom until Saturday because I was afaid I was going to get into trouble. The only reason why I told her then was because I had togo to dancing school and my leotards were white! I was so shocked how understanding she was that I started crying.

My First Period

I got my first period when I was nine in a half years old, I was at my cousins house and we were in her pool and at first I felt weird but I didnt know what it was cause lets face that was the last thing on my mind at nine and the only thing I wanted to do is play with my cousins. I had a few stains on my underwear, but again I didnt pay much attention so i ignored it and the next day it was gone. When I went home my mom saw I had stains on my under wear and she's like " Connie what is this?" and I told her " I dont know mom what it is," and I thought I was gonna get on trouble and then thats when she told me I had started my period with out even knowing. A month after that I was in the kitchen drinking water after running around all day in the heat and I felt again really weird down there and I thought nothing much of it forgetting about the month before so I went to the bathroom and I saw there a red a stain and that reminded me " oh yeah, I started my period," my sister went looking for me and then I told her " BB go call mom, tell her i started my period" and here she comes running in the house all freaked out telling me " okay Connie, im going to the store to buy some pads i'll be right back." After that I felt really grown up, I played less and less with my cousins and became more on the calm side. So that was my first period experience.

My 1st period and The Talk !!

I was in 7th grade (about age 13). I hadn't felt that well that morning, but was fine for the most part. People were laughing at me throughout the day. I was always teased so, that was nothing new for me. I just ignored them and went on about my day. I got home to find my aunt rolling in laughter. I ask what is so funny. When she finally stops laughing she turns me around so my back is facing my parents. They start laughing. I look down and there to my amazement... I'd started my first period all over my favorite white jeans. My dad stops laughing and says... "Well, this is gonna happen every month" and that was the end of the discussion. It was never brought up again.

Merry Christmas

I will NEVER forget mine. December 24th, 1989. I was 12 years old and we were just a couple hours from heading to the big family Christmas Eve gathering. I had been waiting for it, because about half the girls in my class already had theirs. I told my mom and of course she HAD to announce it to the whole family at the Christmas party. I was so mortified. I vow to never humiliate my two daughters in such a way. I am very thankful that none of my nieces have been humiliated the way that I was also. When they got their first bras, however, seems to be public discussion...
